Dead or injured badgersIf you come across a dead or injured badger:
Please phone the BADGERLINE to let us know where you saw the badger. We will then send some-one to look for the casualty so it can be recovered and checked over. If it is injured, we will try to recover it to a vet for treatment.
Reporting a dead badger is vital in the spring and early summer, because dead females may have cubs. If young cubs can not get their mothers milk, they may starve to death.
Monitoring where badgers are killed helps us to find out where they live (so we can conserve them and the green spaces they live and feed in). We can also campaign to have roads improved to reduce accident number and to slow down speeding traffic.
Note that you should not take away the body. Badgers are a protected species and it is an offence to have in your possession a dead badger or any part thereof. Importantly too, badgers are still persecuted; and we monitor persecution cases, so we can pay special attention to badgers setts where persecuted badgers may be found. Please see our Illegal activity page if you think a badger may have been persecuted. |
