Rossendale has a wealth of wildlife, and much of it is to be found in this book. From rabbits to Ring Ouzel and roe deer, the valley's wild population has been increasing in recent decades. The badger population was sparse in the nineteen-seventies as a result of badger-baiting: ironically, it was badger-baiters who reintroduced badgers illegally from Cheshire to ensure a local supply of the creatures for their cruel activities. Some of the badgers took to inhabiting the area's labyrinth of old mineworkings and thus were able to avoid the diggers and form the foundations of today's thriving population.

Many of the photographs in the book are by well-known photographer Brian Oldfield. The pictures are arranged into four habitat sections and each is given a coding from 1 to 10 according to how likely you are to be able to spot the animal in question. Birdwatching TV personality Bill Oddie's message of support and a foreword by former Valley member of Parliament Sir David Trippier complete a wonderful achievement by P.C. Pollard, who hopes to raise substantial sums from the book's sale for the various charities. You can see pictures of the book's launch at the ASDA store on Sunday 9th September 2001 below...

Book Launch at ASDA

The ASDA store in Rawtenstall in the Rossendale Valley in Lancashire was the scene of the launch of the new photographic book "Wild Valley" on 9th September. Rossendale's Search and Rescue team, one of the charities which will benefit from sales of the book, were on hand to demonstrate their skills in a spectacular mock-rescue from the nearby river Irwell. A Valley-wide "Wild Valley" competition had been held involving amateur and professional photographers and local schools, and the competition's winner, eight-year old Andrew Fielding was there to receive his prize certificate. Part of the prize was a cash sum for his school, and the winning photograph, of buttercups, is proudly published in the book, alongside the work of top photographers.

The book was the brainchild of local policeman Dale Pollard, who has spent many leisure hours walking the local hills and often sees wildlife in the Valley's streets when on early patrols. He says that motorways flanked with trees and greenery and a gradual cleaning-up of the results of Rossendale's largely industrial past have contributed to a wildlife explosion in the area. The book will encourage people to take a fresh look at their environment and appreciate the wealth of wildlife around them.
