20th February 2010 - Northern Badger Groups Forum

This was a quarterly meeting of a group of badger groups from the North of England.

We discussed:

  • Operation Meles - a Police operation to target and catch wildlife criminals, such as badger baiters.
  • Covert Cameras workshop - where we learnt about how to site and place CCTV cameras to record activity at badger setts with a view to obtaining evidence for criminal prosecutions.
  • The work of Lancashire senior wildlife liaison police officer, Duncan Thomas.
  • The use of social media on the internet to tell on-line friends what you are doing to help badgers.

Overall a useful discussion which we plan to continue with in the future.

22nd November 2009 - Sett Capping

Members of the group put a lot of hard work into doing a "sett capping". This is where we cover the top of an "at-risk" badger sett with steel-mesh and other protective materials. The protection means that badger diggers are not able to dig into the sett to extract the badgers to kill them. The sett is also watched regularly by local people and others who have been trained in covert surveillance. Because the work involves us digging in the vicinity of a badger sett, we had to obtain a special licence from Natural England. They were happy for us to have such a licence due to the good work we have done to protect badgers over many years.

25th October 2009 - Artificial Sett and Badger Release

Members of the group worked on another artificial badger sett in the North Wales area. We helped another badger group construct a sett in a remote area and were very pleased to see badgers be released into their new home. Overall a fantastic experience.

24th October 2009 - Badger Training Day

Our Badger Training Day for 2009 took place at Wycoller Country Park starting in the Pepper Hill Barn (this is not same as the aisled barn). The Training Day is where we explained about the natural history of the badger, and then go into the woodlands and fields to look for signs of badgers. The day touched upon the law and persecution too.

All sessions started with a presentation in the Pepper Hill Barn (walking from the Trawden Road, cross over the twin-arched pack-horse bridge, then turn left and go up the slope about 50 metres and it is on the right-hand side. There was also a walk to a badger sett to look for signs of badger activity. All attendees received a special Finding Evidence of Badgers booklet - this being a useful reference point for animal observations at a later date.

Please contact us by email us on enquiries@lancashirebadgergroup.org.uk if you would be interested in attending a talk like this again, as we are considering running the same course on a weekday.

Bait Marking Survey in Central Lancashire (February/March 2009)

We are currently embarking on a bait marking study to find out more about how badgers use a large wildlife site in central Lancashire.

We are looking for volunteers who can help us feeding badgers and monitor their whereabouts. This is an important piece of work, which should prove interesting, educational and rewarding for people who want to find out more about badgers.

For details of how to get involved, please contact database@lancashirebadgergroup.org.uk.
