Rhody Goes Home!

August 10, 2012

It was a happy ending to Rhody’s journey when, late on Wednesday night and despite some unwanted attention, he safely returned to his own territory.

Ready to go thank you very much!

Having been given the all-clear by our friends in Knutsford, Rhody’s big day had finally arrived. Plans were made, everyone turned up and Rhody, scratching at the wooden cage floor, was definitely up for gaining his freedom.

Once in position, our audacious badger was to be given time to pick up on the familiar sights and smells, before the cage door was released. All we had to do was to sit and wait, what could be simpler?

Alas, our worst case scenario occurred when a dozen cows came wandering over to investigate!

There was a tense standoff – would the cows trample the cage, should we go and re-rescue Rhody, if we entered the field would it cause a case of bovine panic?

Thankfully, the cows remained calm, unfortunately they also remained slap-bang in the middle of the release area. These ladies were definitely not for moving! We could hear Rhody scratching away.

Eventually enough was enough and a decision was made. Like Harry Potter wearing his cloak of invisibility, we entered the field, crept around the cows and sprang the cage release – for Rhody to stay exactly where he was!

Typical, after all his pleading, it took another thirty minutes for him to eventually trot off into the night. It would be nice to think that maybe he gave Lancashire Badger Group a nod of appreciation before returning home.

Good luck Rhody!
